Seed Storage Tips

Tips for Seed Storage

We often have a lot of questions regarding this, since we are a UK based company and because the law prohibits us from selling these for any other use, we have to sell our seeds for storage and souvenir purposes.

However, it may take a long time for the law to change, so you should know the best way to store your souvenirs.

As in a natural environment, throughout the winter the seeds would be stored in a cool place – so this must replicated with your souvenir cannabis seeds.

It is imperative that all seeds are completely dry and that all other debris are removed from the storage package. Even packaging that is slightly damp can cause the seeds to rot or go mouldy.

Zip-lock bags placed inside smelly-proof jars are great for locking out the moisture and keeping the seeds nice and cool and when stored in a fridge can extend seeds shelf life by years. Storing this way also helps the seeds retain a certain degree of the moisture inside the shell, preventing them from drying out.  Although it is optimal to store seeds in a cool place, storing them in a freezer is probably not a good idea as they could end up with freezer burn.  If you do wish to use a freezer, please ensure you use a vacuum bag with a food grade silica bag. (This bit is really important – if it is not food grade it could be toxic)

As a rule of thumb though, seeds should be stored somewhere dry, cool and dark.

If you don’t have a fridge / freezer and you are only storing them on a short term basis, a cool dark place like a pantry or cupboard will be OK, although maybe not a bathroom cupboard as they tend to be damp. Again, a vacuum or air tight bag or jar is a better idea for storage, helping to keep the moisture at bay.  If you are storing them ‘in the open’, then ensure the storage area isn’t near a heater or an oven etc. as this can ruin the seeds – they don’t like the heat!  Also, and we know this is common sense, but do not damage or squash the seeds. Once you accidently crack the shell it is effectively game over. Damaging the shell can let in germs, bugs, and moisture.

Of course, like any natural entity, the viability will decline after a certain amount of years but following these correct storage tips can help maintain a healthy product.

Thanks for Sensi Seeds!
